Information has been collected. The Safe Communities Committee will be discussing the issue at their regular meeting on May 11th. Further information will be gathered regarding traffic patterns and long term capital planning for the street in question.

The road was re-paved in 2013 (cost: $219,270) and at that time sidewalks were considered. After observing pedestrian levels and speaking to adjacent property owners, it was decided not to install sidewalks.

The Safe Communities Committee discussed this issue on Wednesday May 11th. They decided not to make a recommendation to install sidewalks (due to the previous decision that they were not necessary) and not to expand the 30 km/hr zone due to the short length of the street (traffic can likely not accelerate too aggressively in the short distance between the two stop signs).

The Safe Communities Committee did recommend that a Caution sign be installed on the street, alerting motorists to the fact that pedestrians may be walking on the roadway. An image of the proposed new sign is attached. The sign would be installed on the street light pole on the west side of the road at the alley north of Laurel Place.

Traffic patterns will continue to be monitored to see if additional measures need to be taken in the future.

Administration contacted the resident to inform them of the decision by the Safe Communities Committee. It was also noted that once the sign is installed, the resident will be contacted again, for final follow-up.

The resident contacted senior administration/Council to discuss the concern. Sidewalks and the posting of a sign was not the intent of the request; the request is for extension of the 30 km/h zone. Administration will wait for direction to proceed with this concern.

The pole that the “Caution” sign was to be installed on is actually the property of a third party utility company, and there were discussions with staff surrounding the process to install a sign on the property of the third party, which caused the delay in installing the sign.

Council Committee discussed the concern regarding the speed limit on 7th Street West at their meeting yesterday (June 28th) and have decided to expand the 30 km/h zone from 4th Avenue to Laurel Place. School/playground zone signs are required to be installed, and the timeline for the installation of the signs will be discussed with the Manager of Public Works and Utilities upon his return to the office on July 11th

School/playground zone signs were installed July 19. Resident was updated via email. No further action required.
